Background: With two weeks to go before the start of the Olympic Games - opening ceremony August 25 - many athletes heave already flown into the gaily decorated city of Rome, Thailand's basketball team and Japanese competitors arrived by air August 9, received bouquets of flowers from female supporters and drove to the Olympic Village.
Some 7,000 athletes will live in the Olympic Village during the Games. Twenty restaurants and an international army of cooks will serve anything from steak-and-kidney pie and spaghetti to raw fish for the Japanese team. More than GBP3 million has been spent by the Italian Olympic committee for the stadiums and buildings.
One of the biggest problems in Olympic Rome will be travelling from one place to another. Experts predict that another 25,000 cars will be added to Rome's already chaotic traffic situation. A new road connects the Olympic Village with the City centre.
