Background: Rangoon turned out in force to welcome the globe-trotting Pandit Nehru, Prime Minister of India, on his way home from a state visit to Japan.
Premier U Nu along with his Cabinet colleagues gathered at the beautiful Mingaladon airport, with members of the Diplomatic Corps and other important dignitaries for the arrival of Mr Nehru.
Mr Nehru's visit was for one day only and primarily a private one. During his stay he was to have talks with Burmese leaders. The Burmese President, Mr U. Win Maung, was holding a State banquet in his honour.
The inscrutable Sule Pagoda, in Rangoon's centre, presided in a mute way over the sunny welcome to India's Prime Minister as he drove off from the garlands welcome at beflagged Mingaladon airport.
Huge crowds of Indians and Burmese were everywhere and mingling with them Buddhist monks with their begging bowls. Everywhere children and ready with little posies of flowers.
At the dinner in his honour, Mr Nehru was welcomed by President Maung and Mr U Nu. At the dinner dancers performed before the guests.
Arrived back at the airport Mr Nehru talked with pressmen and accepted bouquets from pretty little Burmese girls. Bidding farewell to his hosts he then entered the Russia Illyushin of the Indian Air Force, which was to fly him back home.
