Background: Venezuela has retained the World Boxing Council junior featherweight championship, challenged by Argentina on Sunday (26 September).
SYNOPSIS: The junior featherweight title remained in Venezuela when the champion, Luis "Lumumba", Estaba, the taller and darker of the two boxers, beat the Argentine challenger, Rodolfo Rodriguez. It was the fifth successful defence of the title by the Venezuelan who is 35. He has been the world junior featherweight champion since September last year.
Throughout the fight, Estaba used his experience to advantage. Rodriquez, 12 years younger than the champion, put up a good fight, but his youth aggressiveness and all-round physical condition were not enough to keep him off the canvas.
In the 10th round, the champion increased the pressure and both boxers seemed a bit carried away with the fight. They continued boxing after the bell and an attempt by the referee to separate them only landed him on the floor. By this time, the Argentine challenger was bleeding from a cut over his left eye. He failed to come out for the 11th rounds, leaving the championship with the Venezuelan.
