Background: The clang of the fire engine bell which has been a familiar sound in England for more than 50 years may soon disappear with the introduction of a new type of warning siren on Britain's fire engines. The new siren gives a two-tone sound, a high and a low note following each other in quick succession.

With the ever increasing traffic and noise on the roads the old-type bells are no longer sufficient to warn the public of the approach of a fast fire engine on an emergency mission.

The new siren - the same as used by the French fire brigades. - will increase both safety and speed on these missions.
