Background: Britain's Jackie Stewart, forced out of the Austrian Grand Prix nevertheless won the World Motor Racing Drivers Championship yesterday (15 August). Stewart's car, travelling at over 150 kilometres per hour (93 m.p.h.) spun off the track and ploughed over grass. The driver stepped out of the car unhurt after the accident. The race was won by Swiss driver, Jo Siffert who averaged 212.92 (KPH) (132.92 m.p.h.) in a BRM car.
Before the race, only Jacky Ickx of Belgium, and Ronnie Peterson of Sweden had any chance of overtaking Stewart in the championship standings. But they failed to win a place high enough in the Austrian Grand Prix to keep their chances alive and Stewart became champion for the second time in three years.
