Background: Table tennis, and the world champions, China, lived up to their reputation in winning the men's final of the international team's competition on Thursday, (11 January) played at Brighton in the United Kingdom. The International Championships, sponsored by the Norwich Union insurance group, attracted its finest field for many years with eight of the top twelve male players in the world competing.

SYNOPSIS: Here's Liang Ke-Liang of China, rated number four in the world, playing Gabor Gergely of Hungary, rated the fifth-best in the world. Liang has been a top player for the past ten years. He first came to fame in the 1971 World Championships, when China first re-entered the world table tennis scene. Liang won the first game twenty-one...twelve.

Gabor Gergely is the current European Champion, the most consistent of the Hungarian team at the championships. His strong point is a bewildering topspin on both backhand and forehand. Gergely win this point. And the next to be four points down, fourteen... eighteen against Liang... in the second and last game.

Liang is a master of all styles, both defence and attack. And despite strong play by Gergely the Chinese star lost no further points. He won the second game, twenty-one fourteen to take the match. China beat Hungary in the team competition final, three matches to nil.
