Background: Several thousand Lebanese demonstrated through the main streets of Beirut yesterday (Monday) in protest against the Jordanian army round-up of Palestinian commands. The demonstrators, organised by left-wing movements, marched to Parliament House Square where leaders called on Arab states to sever diplomatic and economic links with Jordan.

SYNOPSIS: Main streets of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, were thronged with demonstrators on Monday. They were marching in support of the Palestinian cause--protesting against the roundup of guerrillas by the Jordanian Army. The demonstrators shouted slogans against King Hussein and carried placards asking why other Arab nations had not intervened during the latest fighting in Jordan. At the time of the demonstration, the Jordanian Embassy in the city was strongly guarded by police and armoured cars.

The demonstrators made their way along streets towards Parliament House Square. Steel-helmeted police kept an eye on the marchers, but thee was no trouble.

Outside Parliament, a Palestinian commando spokesman urged all Arab states to sever diplomatic and economic links with Jordan. Organisers of the protest sent a cable to Commando leader Yasser Arafat backing the resistance movement.
