Background: SYNOPSIS: Traditional Fiji native dancers perform in the streets of Suva amid scenes of gaiety for the annual South Pacific Festival, an attraction that brings tourists from many parts of the world. Its main emphasis is on arts and culture.
But beneath the bunting and decorations was a more serious note....as demonstrators carrying placards marched in protest at the forthcoming nuclear tests planned by France in the southern pacific. French authorities have refused to reveal when the tests will be held, pleading military security. The protestors demanded France reverse her decision to go on with the tests.
Fiji's Prime Minister, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, earlier announced that French naval ships and military aircraft connected with the tests would be refused facilities in Fiji.
After marching through the streets, the protestors gathered at a rally to hear their leaders attack the tests.
