Background: A FIRE WRECKED SHELL - ALL THAT'S LEFT OF THE AMERICAN MILITARY MISSION BUILDING IN CARACAS, THE VENEZUELAN CAPITAL, AS THE VIOLENT CAMPAIGN OF THE SELF-STYLED "ARMED FORCES OF NATIONAL LIBERATION (F.A.L.N.) CONTINUES. THE AIM OF THE FALN IS TO TOPPLE GOVERNMENT OF PRESIDENT ROMULO BETANCOURT.

EIGHT GUNMEN RAIDED THE AMERICAN MILITARY MISSION'S HEADQUARTERS. THE VENEZUELAN GUARD OVERPOWERED, THE GUNMEN FORCED 12 MISSION EMPLOYEES TO STRIP OF THEIR CLOTHES. THEY THEN SET FIRE TO THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING AFTER SPRAYING THE ROOMS WITH PETROL AND FIRING MACHINE GUNS AT OFFICE FURNITURE AND EQUIPMENT. ONE TARGET OF THE GUNMEN WAS THE PORTRAIT OF GEORGE WASHINGTON, THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF AMERICA. BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS HAD THE BLAZE UNDER CONTROL SOME 20 THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH OF DAMAGE HAD BEEN CAUSED.

ONE THIRD OF THE COUNTRY'S DETECTIVE FORCE WERE ORDERED INTO THE HUNT FOR THE RAIDERS AND BY THE END OF THE FIRST DAY THREE SUSPECTS HAD BEEN DETAINED.

EARLY LAST MONTH FALN RAIDERS WERE BLAMED FOR THE EXPLOSION THAT WRECKED AN OIL PIPELINE OWNED BY THE AMERICAN CREOLE PETROLEUM COMPANY - THE THIRD ATTACK ON THE COMPANY'S INSTALLATIONS IN THREE MONTHS. A NATIONAL GUARDSMAN WAS KILLED AND 11 PEOPLE WOUNDED IN AMBUSHES BY TERRORISTS IN THE CAPITAL ON 10TH APRIL. ON THE SAME DAY AN AMERICAN CHEWING-GUM FACTORY WAS DESTROYED BY INCENDIARY BOMBS CAUSING DAMAGE VALUED AT MORE THAN HALF A MILLION DOLLARS.
