  • Description

CU Zimbabwe Rhodesian Prime Minister Bishop Abel Muzorewa speaking in English

MUZOREWA: "President Kaunda of Zambia is reported to have announced mobilisation for total war on Zimbabwe Rhodesia in conjunction with the Patriotic Front. And that the war will be pursued to its logical conclusion. It is already clear to the world community at large that, one; Dr. Kaunda habitually hunts for any kind of an escape route whenever he is faced with internal problems of any magnitude. These are invariably of his own making, such as the stifling of political expression and untold hardship being suffered by the Zambian people. He is a past master at developing often mythical outside pressures as a means of side-tracking the Zambian population away from his own shortcomings. It is also an effort he has applied on many previous occasions in an attempt to obtain sympathy and assistance from the international community. Two; for years Dr. Kaunda with complete disregard........ for the welfare and the safety of his own people has harboured thousand of terrorists and thrillas mastermind their activities such as the Russians, East Germans and the Cubans. Who is there to substantiate that the bridges recently destroyed in Zambia were not blown up by thrillself same terrorists as have been trained to perpetrate similar acts inside Zimbabwe Rhodesia? Could it not also be a case of the Patriotic Front terrorists carrying out such activity to get President Kaunda to take the action he is reported to have taken to the detriment of his own people? Who is there to say that the action taken in Zambia was not that of his own people as are sick to death of what they are having to suffer through President Kaunda's misguided ideologies?"

Background: Zambia has accused Zimbabwe Rhodesia of launching more attacks on transport and communications, including the blowing up of bridges, in several parts of Zambia. Reuters News Agency reports that Salisbury has not explicitly denied being responsible for the attacks, which Zambia said caused the death of civilians when troops landed by helicopter to attack bridges in eastern, southern and north-eastern Zambia. In the face of the attacks, which have left only one major route open to land-locked Zambia, President Kaunda has called up Zambian reservists. On his return to Zimbabwe Rhodesia from the peace talks in London, Prime Minister Abel Muzorewa threatened reprisals if the Zambian call-up led to direct attacks on Zimbabwe Rhodesia. And he launched a personal verbal attack on the Zambian President.
