Background: In Argentina, Army Commander-in-Chief, and junta member, Lieutenant-General Roberto Eduardo Viola, on Tuesday (19 September) inspected troops in Cordoba. General Viola later told a news conference he was optimistic about a peaceful solution to current negotiations with Chile over the disputed Beagle Channel.

SYNOPSIS: The troops General Viola was inspecting belong to the Air Transport Artillery Force Four. They are part of Argentina's Third Army Corps, which covers most of the country's frontier with Chile. On the immediate right of General Viola, who is saluting, is the Corps commander, General Luciano Menendez.

The inspection took place during General Viola's tour of the provinces of Mendoza and San Juan both of which are on the Chilean frontier. General Viola later told newsmen that Argentina would not surrender one inch of her sovereignty in the Beagle Channel dispute. Earlier this month, talks had reached an impasse. An international tribunal last year awarded three islands in the channel, near Cape Horn, to Chile. Argentina accepted this on condition that the off-shore waters on the Atlantic side were regarded as theirs. Argentina, however, rejected Chilean President Augusto Pinochet's contention that the award covered Chilean sovereignty of an immense area of these waters.

Despite these differences, General Viola said he was optimistic a peaceful solution could be reached.
