Background: In East Berlin, on the last day of the East German Swimming Championships, another world record was broken. Teenager Brabara Krause clipped 0.24 seconds off the old women's 100 metres freestyle record and finished the five-day competition with two new world records.

SYNOPSIS: The East German event was held with only weeks to go before the 1978 World Championships in West Berlin. Prospects are bright for the East German women, who produced a number of new world records during the competition. On Sunday (2 July), Miss Krause, seen here in lane four, had won the 200 metres freestyle in a record time of one minute, 59.04 seconds.

In the 100 metres Miss Krause, who is 19 years old, pulled away steadily in the last 50 metres. At the finish, she had broken the record set by Kornelia Ender, also an East German, at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Her final time was 55.41 seconds, more than a second's lead on second-place finisher Heike Witt.

At the World Championships, the East German women will face their toughest challenge since their domination of international swimming began in Belgrade in 1973. The main competition is expected to come from the Americans and Australians.
