Background: To step up Soviet trade in the Middle East, First Deputy Prime Minister Anastas Mikoyan - noted for his US tour as "Russia's number one travelling salesman" - arrived by air at Baghdad airport, Iraq, April 8 for a week's official visit. Greeting him was Prime Minister Major-General Karim Kassem, Foreign Minister Hashim Jawad, and members of the Soviet Community in Iraq - among them wives and children of Soviet technicians and advisers on development projects in the 20-month old Iraqi Republic.

Mr. Mikoyan - the highest Soviet Minister yet to visit the Middle East - waved as he alighted from his aircraft to be greeted in falling rain by the Prime Minister's warm handshake. After a brief rest in the airport reception hall with Soviet Ambassador Gregori Ziatsev and interpreters, Mr. Mikoyan drove by car to Al-Zehoor Palace, the Palace of Flowers, a former Royal residence close to the Royal Palace in which King Feisal 11 met his death in the July 1958 Republican coup d'etat. Recent guests at the Palace of Flowers: President Soekarno of Indonesia and King Mohammed V of Morocco.

During Mr. Mikoyan's drive through the city, groups belonging to the now officially licensed Communist Party of Iraq were among the crowds to wave a welcome with placards in Arabic and Russian: Peace and Friendship and Welcome Mikoyan, the People of Peace Salute You.

After long talks with Prime Minister Kassem and his Ministers, Mr. Mikoyan opened a Soviet industrial exhibition April 10. During his stay he will visit the Russian-developed oil centre of Basra.
