Hubert Humphrey, the American vice-president, was the highest elected public official at the opening of the World Series, one of the biggest events-annually on the U-S sports scene.
The first game was held in Bloomington, Minnesota, midway between the twin cities of Minneapolis and St.Paul, located in the northern part of the American middle west.
Mr.Humphrey was thrust into even greater prominance because of the announcement on October 5th that President Lyndon Johnson will undergo surgery in Washington, D.C.for removal of his gall bladder. The surgery is major and the president's physicians say he is in excellent condition for the operation to take place at the Bethesday Naval Hospital on Friday, October 8th.
The President says he and Mr.Humphrey have reached agreement that Mr, Humphrey, the vice president, would act in the President's place should any occasion arise necessitating it while the President is under sedation just before, during and immediately following the operation.
