Background: At the Fourth West African Universities Athletics Championships ending in Lagos on Saturday, Major-General Yakubu Gowon was the guest of honour, and Mrs Victoria Gowon presented the medals and prizes.
The University of Ife, one of six Nigerian institutions of higher learning taking part, won both women's and men's competitions.
As well as Nigeria, six other West African nations - Dahomey, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Senegal and Sierra Leone - took part.
SYNOPSIS: Nigerian Head of State Major-General Yakubu Gowon was the guest of honour on Saturday on the final day of the fourth West African Universities Games, held at Lagos University.
Universities took part from seven West African countries, two of them French-speaking ones. Nigeria the host nation had by far the biggest contingent, with men and women athletes from six of its institutions of higher learning.
