Background: The Indian Krishna Consciousness movement celebrated an important event in their development on home territory recently-a change for an organisation which is better known for the impact it has made on the western mind over the last decade.

SYNOPSIS: The location was one of India's biggest cities-Bombay-and the reason for the festivities the inauguration of a new Krishna temple on Sunday (15 January). Singing and dancing in the streets is an integral part of a Krishna devotee's way of life-but the rest of his or her existence is pretty austere.

However no effort is spared to decorate Krishna temples in the finest of the Indian ornate tradition. The Lord Krishna is revered as epitomising the qualities of the supreme Godhead. In Vedic mythology he is depicted as a young, handsome child-god who entranced lesser mortals with his exquisite flute music. These panels show scenes from his life on earth. The transportation of this Hindu cult from its native Indian to the world at large was primarily the work of one man. The late A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhubada died in India in November last year, aged 82.

But before he passed on he travelled the globe as head of Krishna Consciousness-and picked up thousands of deciples on the way. The movement is at its strongest in the United States, but there are also many centres in Europe, among them a millionaire's mansion bought for the cult by pop star George Harrison in England. For those who adopt Krishna as a way of life reciting mantras, vegetarianism, communal living and the renunciation of family ties go hand-in-hand with a state of bliss which is alleged to bring them into union with the Divine.
