    Background: INTRODUCTION: The Algerian government of Chadli Benjedid is in the process of diversifying it foreign relations, and increasing its trading contacts with the west. Recently it won a reputation as a mediator in the Arab world after its role in settling the Iranian hostage crisis. Nicaraguan officials have just arrived in Algiers (6 September) for high-lever talks, as the government of Chadli Benjedid seeks influence in Latin America.

    SYNOPSIS: A co-ordinator for Nicaragua's ruling junta, Mr. Daniel Ortega Saavedra, arrived at Algiers airport. He was met by the Secretary-General of the Central committee, Muhammad Messaadia.

    The Nicaraguans have serious economic problems but occupy a delicate position in the military tensions of Central America. After American aid was cut off when the Us accused the junta of supplying the rebels in El Salvador, Nicaragua turned to the radical Arab regimes. Iraq and Libya are both reported to be supporting Nicaragua's economy.

    Algeria is said to have given Nicaragua as may as 30 tanks and large quantities of arms. the talks are expected to cement the close ties which already exist between the two radical republics.
