Background: SUNDERLAND, July 23rd: Russia today won through to the semi-finals of the World Cup with a two-one victory over Hungary. Russia's goals were scored by Chislenko, in the first half, and by Porkujan, in the second. They will now meet West Germany in the semi-final at Wembley on Tuesday.
Russia wasted little time in getting the upper hand. A corner had Hungary's keeper, Gelei, fumbling the ball and allowed Chislenko to race in and score. Two minutes after the start Russia were one-goal up.
The Hungariam forwards tried their best to pierce the Russian defence. A series of short passes out to Rokosi, brought a roar from the crowd as the shot bounced off the cross-bar.
A mid-field free kick against Russia, sent the Hungarian strikers into action again. But over-elaboration in the penalty area gave Russia's defenders ample time to cover every shot at goal.
Two minutes after half-time, Khusainov took a free and outside-left Porkujan easily rean in the ball to make it two-nil.
Hungary were then stung into action, Albert ran the ball up field, passed to Messoly who directed a pin-point pass to Bene - and Hungary opened their account.
Hungary then made an all out effort to equalise. Russian had ten men in the box, and even then the Hungarians managed to break through. But they failed to capitalise on a Russian error which left Rokosi with a open goal. He kicked, missed and Russia cleared.
Rokosi didn't know how he missed and he must have shuddered again as Banishevski, Russia only striker in the closing minutes, made a brilliant solo attack on the Hungarian goal. The Hungarians tried to have the final word, but Russia's curtain defence was too good. Shesternev, Voronin, Denilov and Yashin served their side well, blunting every Hungarian attack up to the final whistle. Hungary were down and out two goals to one.
