Lieutenant Colonel Hardoy was leading an attack on an army medical post held by leftwing urban guerrillas. when he was killed. The guerrillas held the post for more than five hours and the Police Chief, Haraclio Ferrazano said eleven members of the Marxist People's Revolutionary Army surrendered after the gun battle. He said they were apparently trying to steal machine-guns and ammunition held at the post.
Five of the guerrillas were among some 600 political prisoners who were freed when Dr Campora took office as President in May.
