Background: Jaime Fillol of Chile advanced to the semi-finals of the Dewar Cup Tennis Championships on Thursday (4 November) with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Arthur Ashe. The tournament is being played at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

SYNOPSIS: Ashe, last year's Wimbledon champion was fourth seed but had been plagued by an injury to his left heel. After his loss he said he would fly back to the U.S. the following morning (5 November) to enter a New York hospital for possible surgery. The quarter-final was a high speed tussle but is was the Chilean that turned on the most sparkling display from the outset.

Fillol serves. He's the seventh seed in the championships. This year he's been playing well and last weekend in France was the losing finalist in the Paris set, Fillol had the edge on him and took the set six games to four.

By comparison with other quarter finals played that day the match was a classic example of first class tennis, with a liberal sprinkling of brilliant, high-speed rallies form both players.

There was only one service break in each of the first two sets. Ashe took the second set 3-6.

Match point, with Fillol serving. Ashe had already saved two match points but this time the Chilean attacked with a whiplash backhand to take out the match 6-3. With his win, Fillol, joined top seed, Manuel Orantes of Spain and Britain's Mark Cox in the last four.
