Background: The Wills International Skiing Cup in Australia was won on Monday (10 Aug) by Carlo Demetz of Italy.
This year's venue for the wills Cup was Thredbo skifield, 200 miles south-west of Sydney, in the Blue Mountains. Fine weather and crisp hard-packed snow made conditions first class for a large field of competitors from 11 countries. The title race is a combined slalom-giant slalom event.
Young Swiss skier, Adolph Roesti, gave a performance which outclassed many seasoned skiers to take third place. Runner-up to the title was Giuseppe Compagnoni, a member of the Italian team who is a proven skier in many alpine events apart from the slalom, and was sixteenth this year in the World Championship Giant Slalom.
Another Italian, Carlo Demetz, was disqualified in last year's Wills Cup but made up for it with a brilliant run down the course to take the Cup and title. 25-year-old Demetz is now rated high on the European seedings.
