  • Description

NAIROBI STREET AND K.P.U. HEADQUARTERS. MR ODINGA SPEAKING (SOF).

    TRANSCRIPT

MR ODINGA: "MR MOI IN PARLIAMENT YESTERDAY STATED THAT I FLEW TO UGANDA LAST WEEK TO COLLECT FUNDS FROM CERTAIN FOREIGN MISSIONS IN KAMPALA FOR SUBVERSIVE PURPOSES. I WISH TO STATE TO OUR PEOPLE AND THE WORLD THAT MR MOI'S STATEMENT IS AN INVENTION OF HIS OWN MIND, A COMPLETE FABRICATION WHICH IS WITHOUT GRAIN OF TRUTH, SUBSTANCE OR FOUNDATION."

"ANY INTELLIGENT PERSON KNOWS THAT KANU RECEIVES LARGE SUMS OF FOREIGN MONEY AND THAT THE BOGEY OF COMMUNIST MONEY IS JUST A GIMMICK TO EXTORT MORE MONEY FROM THEIR IMPERIALIST FOREIGN FINANCIERS. I HAVE OFTEN WARNED AGAINST RULING THIS COUNTRY THROUGH FEAR, INTIMIDATION AND RUMOURS AND OUR PEOPLE NOW HAVE CAUSE TO WONDER WHETHER THIS IS THE UHURU WE SO COURAGEOUSLY FOUGHT FOR, OR WHETHER THE COUNTRY IS BEING GOVERNED UNDER THE CONTROL OF LAW OR BY UNCONTROLLED EMOTIONS AS EXHIBITED BY MR MOI IN PARLIAMENT YESTERDAY. IS THERE ANY FUTURE FOR DEMOCRACY IN KENYA UNDER KANU GOVERNMENT NOW THAT WE ARE ALREADY NO LONGER ALLOWED TO MOVE FREELY TO OUT NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES? IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF A KENYA IRON CURTAIN UNDER KANU GOVERNMENT?"

THE ALLEGATIONS WERE MADE ON TUESDAY BY MR DANIEL MOI, MINISTER FOR HOME AFFAIRS. HE SAID MR ODINGA HAD VISITED UGANDA UNDER AN ASSUMED NAME AND THAT WHEN STOPPED BY GUARDS AT THE BORDER ON HIS RETURN, HAD DRUNK THREE-QUARTERS OF A BOTTLE OF WHISKY AND STRIPPED OFF MOST OF HIS CLOTHES.

MR ODINGA'S REPLY WAS THAT THE NAME HE HAD USED WAS ONE HE COULD, AND FREQUENTLY DID, USE QUITE LEGALLY. HIS ACCOUNT OF THE BORDER INCIDENT WAS THAT THE GUARDS HAD THREATENED FORCE IF HE DID NOT SUBMIT TO A SEARCH.

MR ODINGA SAID HE WAS IN KAMPALA TO DISCUSS WITH LAWYERS THE DETENTION IN KENYA OF NINE OF HIS PARTY'S SUPPORTERS. HE DESCRIBED THE ALLEGATIONS AS A COMPLETE FABRICATION ...

MR ODINGA THEN GAVE HIS VERSION OF HIS VISIT TO KAMPALA AND CONTINUED...
