"One o'clock this afternoon in downtown Columbia. Officials at the Maury County jail say fire broke out inside the jail, pouring heavy smoke throughout the building. One police officer said apparently jail attendants could not quickly find the key to the cells to get approximately 64 prisoners to safety. Assistant Columbia fire chief Reuben (indistinct) was first to arrive at the scene. He told that smoke was extremely heavy inside the jail. Firemen had to break into one wall of the jail to free those trapped. No word on the number of men who died -- but assistant fire chief said that it would take a miracle to survive that heavy smoke. Firemen said it was about 20 minutes before the first prisoner was released from that building. Maury County National Guardsmen were called to control the crowd around the county jail -- hundreds of people from the town came to witness the tragedy.

Maury County hospital put aside a temporary ward for those who died, most officials say because of smoke inhalation. Ambulances from Maury County, Williamson, Marshall, Giles and Barnes County were called in to help transport those injured to a hospital just two miles away. From Columbia, Joe Cook, Channel Four News."

Background: A prison blaze in the United States killed 42 people on Sunday (26 June). Thirty four prisoners and eight visitors died in the fire during visiting time at the Maury County jail in Columbia, Tennessee. Police believe the fire was started deliberately. It is thought to have begun in a padded cell occupied by a young convict who although seriously burnt, survived, and is now in hospital. The cell was in a part of the jail used to house mentally disturbed prisoners. For hours after the blaze fire officials couldn't say how many of the dead were inmates and how many visitors. Joe Cook of Channel Four News reports.
