Background: STRINGENT SECURITY MEASURES ARE IN FORCE AT PARIS'S NEW PALACE OF CULTURE FOR THE BIGGEST-EVER EXHIBITION OF THE WORKS OF PABLO PICASSO. ARMED GUARDS PATROL DAY AND NIGHT TO PROTECT NEARLY 1,000 WORKS -- INCLUDING PAINTINGS, SCULPTURE, DRAWINGS, ENGRAVINGS AND CERAMICS -- OF ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS AND CONTROVERSIAL ARTISTS.
THE EXHIBITION IS BEING HELD TO CELEBRATE THE ARTIST'S RECENT 85TH BIRTHDAY AND IS CALLED "HOMAGE TO PABLO PICASSO." IT IS THE BIGGEST OF A SERIES OF COMMEMORATIONS BEING HELD THROUGHOUT FRANCE TO HONOUR THE SPANISH-BORN ARTIST, LONG ASSOCIATED WITH FRANCE.
PICASSO HIMSELF, WHO STAYS CONFINED TO HIS HOME IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE, HAS CONTRIBUTED 100 PAINTINGS. PRIVATE COLLECTORS AND ART GALLERIES IN THE UNITED STATES AND EAST AND WEST EUROPE ARE LENDING A FURTHER 180 PAINTINGS.
IN ADDITION, 200 WORKS OF SCULPTURE, 200 DRAWINGS, 115 PIECES OF CERAMICS AND 200 ENGRAVINGS WILL BE ON SHOW.
DETAILED INSURANCE ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED WITH MUSEUMS CONTRIBUTING TO THE EXHIBITION AS FAR APART AS CHICAGO'S ART INSTITUTE AND MOSCOW'S PUSHKIN MUSEUM.
THE EXHIBITION WILL OPEN TODAY (FRIDAY) AND CONTINUE UNTIL FEBRUARY 12TH.
