Background: At least 30 tourist were feared killed on Monday (18 January) when a footbridge suspended over a scenic waterfall collapsed. About 40 people were on the bridge when it fell down, throwing most of them into the river. The accident occurred at the Sete Quedas (Seven Falls) site on the Parana River, dividing Brazil from Paraguay. The bridge linked the Brazilian shore with an island, where up to 1000 tourists remained trapped after the accident. Most were believed to be Brazilians. The waterfall is said to be largest in the world in terms of volume of water. After the accident rescue workers rushed to the scene. One young boy described how the accident happened. In Portuguese, he said he was on the bridge when it collapsed. He was able to swim ashore, but his brother drowned. His father was on the other side of the bridge when it came apart.
