DR. WALDHEIM: "Unfortunately, none of the efforts made by so many people to avert the tragedy were in the end effective. Naturally, I immediately expressed my grief and condolences to the Prime Minister of Israel and to the Bundes-Chancellor, Willy Brandt, In this terrible hour, there is little that can be added to these condolences except to appeal to all concerned in this tragic situation to turn away from senseless violence and to redouble their efforts to find peaceful solutions."

The statement issued at the end of the Israel cabinet meeting was read to newsmen by the Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Mike Arnon.

DR. ARNON: "Israel will continue her mission, here defence, and her constant striving for peace undeterred by terror and blackmail. Israel will persevere in her struggle against terror organisations and will not absolve their accomplices from the responsibility for terrorist actions. The Government of Israel will contact governments and political factions and will demand that effective steps be taken against the cells and branches of the terrorist organisations in order to put a stop to their activities and to stamp out their bases. The Prime Mistier noted with appreciation the decision of the authorities of the German Federal Government to act for the liberation of the Israeli hostages and to employ force to this end. The Prime Minister expressed her regret that this aim has not been achieved. It was decided to concentrates detailed and accurate information about the security measures taken in Munich, both by the authorities of the German Federal Republic and by the Israeli bodies responsible, as well as the efforts and attempts made by the German Government to bring about the release of the Israeli hostages.

Background: The Untied Nations Secretary-General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, on Wednesday (6 September) called for an end to what he described as the "senseless violence" used by Arab guerrilla groups. Dr. Waldheim was speaking hours after the airport massacre in Munich in which nine Israeli hostages and five of their captors died during a battle with troops and police.

At the same time israel has pledged continued action against the Palestinian guerrillas. This was made clear in a statement read to newsmen in Tel Aviv after an extraordinary meeting of Israel's cabinet.

In his statement, dr. Waldheim revealed that he was one of many people around the world who tried to secure the release of the Israeli hostages before the Munich bloodbath.
