Background: The Untied Nations Secretary-General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, on Wednesday (6 September) called for an end to what he described as the "senseless violence" used by Arab guerrilla groups. Dr. Waldheim was speaking hours after the airport massacre in Munich in which nine Israeli hostages and five of their captors died during a battle with troops and police.
At the same time israel has pledged continued action against the Palestinian guerrillas. This was made clear in a statement read to newsmen in Tel Aviv after an extraordinary meeting of Israel's cabinet.
In his statement, dr. Waldheim revealed that he was one of many people around the world who tried to secure the release of the Israeli hostages before the Munich bloodbath.
