Background: The Rhodesian mining town of Wankie, where more than four hundred miners died in a colliery explosion last June, is holding its annual agricultural fair in an attempt to erase some of the sorrow left by the disaster.

Although the fair was held in the centre of the town, only a short distance from the sealed-off death-mine, people flocked to the opening on Saturday (August 19) and appeared in good spirits as they toured the various exhibits and stands.

The Wankie disaster happened on June 8th - when a gas explosion ripped through the Kamandama shaft, trapping more than 400 white and black Seven bodies were recovered on the first day of rescue operations, another seven the following day. Then, fearing that rescuers would also die if they continued working in the gas-filled tunnels - and with the certainty that there were no further hopes of finding survivors - authorities decided to seal off the shaft entrance, leaving it as a tomb for the other 419 miners who had died in the disaster.
