Background: Queen Juliana of the Netherlands received an enthusiastic welcome, accompanied by a display of centuries-old customs, when she visited the ancient city of Middelburg, capital of the maritime province of Zeeland, 17 May, to open a new Provincial Registry building to replace that destroyed by German bombing in May, 1940.

Thousands of people, with many of the women in national costume, cheered the Queens as she dove through the streets in an 18th-century phaeton drawn by two sturdy horses. Following her was a company of archers, who later displayed great skill with their long-bows, and men and women in hors-drawn gigs from which they afterwards took part in traditional jousting competitions.

For the Queens's lunch, and for some hundreds of Middelburg's guest of honour, there were pigs roasted on the spit by a Belgian specialist in this art, Monsieur Noel Desloovers.
