TRANSCRIPT SEQ 2: INTERVIEWER: "MR. LEE, WHY DO YOU THINK THE MERGER IS SO IMPORTANT FOR SINGAPORE?

TRANSCRIPT SEQ 3: MR. LEE: "WELL, THE MERGER IS IMPORTANT NOT ONLY FOR SINGAPORE, BUT FOR THE FEDERATION OF MALAYA, AND FOR BORNED, AND IN THE LAST RESORT, FOR THE WHOLE OF SOUTH-EAST ASIA. LET ME EXPLAIN: OVER THE LAST 13 YEARS, SORRY - 1948 TO 1961 - OF THE EMERGENCY, AS TOUCH COUNTER-COMMUNIST MEASURES WERE TAKEN IN THE FEDERATION, A WHOLE HOST OF PRO-COMMUNIST SYMPATHISERS WHO DID NOT GO IN THE JUNGLES, BECAUSE EITHER THEY WERE NOT REQUIRED AT THAT TIME FOR JUNGLE ACTIVITY, OR THEY DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH ARMS AND SO ON, DID NOT STAY IN THE VILLAGES IN THE FEDERATION BECAUSE THE HEAT WAS OH, AND SO THEY DRIFTED DOWN TO SINGAPORE, AND THE NET RESULT IS THAT YOU'VE GOT IN SINGAPORE TODAY ALL THE TROUBLES, NOT ONLY FROM SINGAPORE BUT FROM THE WHOLE OF THE FEDERATION. IN FACT THERE ARE MORE TROUBLES COMING FROM THE FEDERATION PEOPLE THAN FROM THE SINGAPORE PEOPLE. LIFE BECOMES A LITTLE COMPLICATED, SO YOU'VE GOT TO TRY AND CONTAIN THE WHOLE THING IN A BROAD BIG BASE. AFTER, IF YOU DON'T DO THIS, I'LL TELL YOU WHAT WILL HAPPEN: AS THE HEAT MOUNTS UP IN SARAWAK, COMMUNISTS IN THE UNDERGROUND IN SARAWAK, SCOOT OFF AND THEY COME TO SINGAPORE TOO - THE PLACE OF REFUGE, SANCTUARY, LIKE YOU KNOW BERLIN OR SOMETHING. THE NET RESULT WILL BE, ONE OF THESE DAYS, THEY'LL TRY TO DO A CUBA."

Background: SINGAPORE'S PRIME MINISTER, MR. LEE KUAN YEW, IN THIS SOF INTERVIEW, OCT 10, SPOKE OF THE PROPOSED MERGER OF SINGAPORE AND MALAYA.

HE SAID COMMUNISTS COMING FROM MALAYA DURING THE LAST DECADE, OPPOSED THE MERGER BECAUSE IT WOULD MEAN AN INTERNAL SECURITY IN MALAYA UNDER A STRONG CENTRAL GOVERNMENT.

ON BRITISH BASES IN SINGAPORE, MR. LEE SAID ONE COULD EXPECT THEM TO DISAPPEAR OVERNIGHT BUT ONLY OVER A LONG PERIOD - 15 TO 20 YEARS - ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THEY PROVIDED EMPLOYMENT FOR NEARLY 40,000 PERSONS.

ON SEATO, MR. LEE SAID IT HAD COME TO BE RECOGNISED AS AN ANTI-COMMUNIST MILITARY ALLIANCE AND ASIAN COUNTRIES COULD NOT ONLY APPRECIATE NON-COMMUNIST ALLIANCES.
