Background: The three sailors trapped below water in a submarine that sunk suddenly at her moorings in Gosport, Hampshire were rescued today (Friday) after being trapped for ten hours. It is not yet known why the submarine sunk, but he crew spent the night 30 feet below the surface while their rescuers worked above. After attempts by salvage tugs to free the submarine had failed, the submarines went through the normal escape procedure and bobbed safely to the surface.

SYNOPSIS: In the southern English port of Gosport, a potential tragedy was averted on Friday when three sailors trapped in a submarine 30 feet below the surface were rescued safely. Their submarine sank suddenly ten hours earlier, with no warning. Twelve crewmen jumped to safety, but two were trapped inside, with 24 hours supply of air. The Chief Petty officer then went below and stayed there with the two young ratings. After salvage tugs failed to free the submarine, the sailors went through their normal escape procedure. It began quietly at first, with air coming from the escape hatch before the first man bobbed to the surface.

In quick succession, the men reached safety. They said that while below they had been "comfortable, and not bothered". They had been able to chat with their rescuers by radio telephone, and kept up high spirits. But the escape wasn't completely a foregone conclusion. Salvage men spent most of the night attempting to raise the bow of the submarine. But after numerous difficulties a conventional submarine escape was prepared. The ambulance that had stood by was moved nearer the scene as daylight broke....and the sailors were finally brought to safety.

The submarine, "Artemis", is a Second World War vintage patrol submarine - and after it's been examined to see why it sank, it will probably be scrapped.
