    Background: USULATAN PROVINCE, EL SALVADOR

Anti-government rebels attempting to disrupt El Salvador's crucial coffee harvest have been encountering military patrols by regular army units which President Jose Napoleon Duarte has ordered in to protect coffee-rich Usulatan Province. The army continued its helicopter-born saturation patrols on December 19, but Western observers reported that rebel forces have avoided making direct contact with government troops, choosing instead to hit lorries, power stations, and vital coffee-processing plants in an effective series of sabotage strikes. Together with sugar and cotton crops, coffee constitutes a significant majority of El Salvador's essential dollar-earning exports. Rebels troops have launched a two-pronged campaign, demanding higher wages for farm and production workers while trying to destroy agriculture produce after it has been gathered. Government military commanders have apparently scored successes against the infiltrating rebels, causing an unknown number of casualties and capturing some weapons and ammunition.
