Background: The United Nations Security Council July 5 decided unanimously to recommend admission of republic of Somalia to membership of the United Nations.

A resolution to this effect was presented jointly by Italy, Britain and Tunisia. Final admission awaits decision in the Autumn.

Italian UN delegate, Signor Ortona, made a speech of welcome to his country's former colony. Newly independent Somalia consisted formerly of British and Italian Somaliland.

Unanimous endorsement by the Council, makes Somalia the eighty-seventh member of the UN. Other recently independent African nations admitted are Cameroon; Togo; Mali Federation and the Malagasey Republic (formerly Madagascar). The Congo Republic - formerly the Belgian Congo - has its application under consideration.
