REPORTER: General Walli could you tell us his majesty's reaction to the invasion of Afghanistan by Soviet troops?

WALLI: ...the reaction of any patriot, he was shocked and he thought that this was interference into the internal affairs of Afghanistan, and therefore condemnable. And this interference, as it was followed by a military intervention in Afghanistan territory it became an open invasion and therefore is against international law and all the accepted norms of international behaviour. It would be better if the Soviet occupation withdraws and leaves it to the people of Afghanistan to decide freely, and democratically their regime...

REPORTER: Did you expect or have any warning of the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan?

WALLI: Well I didn't have any warning, but one could expect such a thing, because we saw that the different regimes in Afghanistan ...were unable to contain the natural revolt against them, which was getting stronger and stronger, and we saw that the central government was crumbling down...

REPORTER: Does his majesty have nay intention of returning to Afghanistan to lead a resistance?

WALLI: ...he is not a pretender to the crown or anything like that. He is an ordinary Afghan, and he believes that it is the will of the Afghan people which has to be taken into consideration for a form of government...

REPORTER: How is the king supporting the various troops fighting the Soviet invasion?

WALLI: ...economically or otherwise he does not support them....

REPORTER: Do you maintain contact with the guerrillas?

WALLI: I have contact with the leaders...

REPORTER: Does the king feel that Western measures against the Soviets will make them withdraw their troops?

WALLI: ...it depends what the measures will be ...and the scope...in my opinion not sufficient...

REPORTER: Are you in contact with other governments, for example the United States or England?

WALLI: ...personally I'm not in contact with any of the leaders you mentioned...I think its too early to talk about these matters now....
