    Background: President Suharto of Indonesia arrived in the northern Malaysian city of Penang to hold talks with Malaysian leaders, including Prime Minister Datuk Hussein On.

    Datuk Hussein was at the airport to greet the Indonesian President who was accompanies by Indonesian Foreign Minister, Adam Malik.

    After leaving the airport, the heads of state drove to Federal House where they began their first round of talks.

    Diplomatic sources in Penang said that amongst the topics discussed was the procedure for the forthcoming, Second Summit meeting of the Association of South East Asian Nations, ASEAN.

    The talks also covered economic and political issues affecting the ASEAN members. Although no statement was issued immediately after the talks, sources said that bilateral defence issues were also discussed.

    Datuk Hussein was also expected to have briefed the President on the latest development concerning the joint military operations carried out by Malaysian and Thai forces against communist insurgents along the border between the two countries.
