Background: Thousands of people, in cars, on motor-cycles, on scooters, and on foot, demonstrated in Paris late on Thursday, May 29th, evening and in the early hours of May 30th, celebrating De Gaulle's acquisition of power. Waving tricolours, newspapers, any thing they could lay their hands on, they paraded up the Champs-Elysees, shouting, cheering, chanting ''De Gaulle, De Gaulle''. This demonstration was more noisier, colourful and joyous than the anti-De Gaullist's protest on Wednesday.

Motorists sounded the morse code 'V' on their horns--V for Victory. All hell was let loose, thousands of cheering people marching, walking, almost dancing moved towards the Arc de Triomphe. They were putting in to effect Massu's words, "We shall march up the Champs-Elysees!"
At the Arc they gathered round the tomb of the Unknown Warrior and sang the National Anthem, many raising their fingers in the Victory sign. Such was the press on the Paris streets and pavements that the armoured, steel-helmeted, numerousm police kept well away. De Gaulle was in power, they could hardly hit out at his supporters, one never knows who might be of importance tomorrow.

Eventually, when these happy people had cleared away and were sleeping off their excitement, their leader, Gen. Charles de Gaulle, was drafting his Cabinet, assigning portfolios to what may very well be the last government of the Fourth Republic.

On May 30th, a report came in that the police and security guards were at action stations, after an announcement that some De Gaullists were planning another Champs-Elysees march and that the Communists were going to stage a counter-demonstration, at the same time and same place!
