Background: Care bombs killed 27 people and injured almost 100 in the Irish Republic on Friday (17 May).

Twenty-two people died in Dublin the Irish Republic's capital, and five in the border town of Monaghan. The Dublin blasts happened at half past five in the middle of the evening rush hour when the streets were crowded with workers on their way home.

All the explosions took place in the predominantly Catholic south, which has so far suffered very few casualties.

Three separate bombs exploded near Dublin's city centre -- in Talbot Street, Parnell Street and the junction of South Leinster Street and Lincoln Place. The victims were 15 women, five men and two children. 81 people were injured and wrecked cars blocked the path of emergency vehicles to the affected areas.

The car bomb in Monaghan went off outside a Catholic bar, killing five people and injuring several others.

The Irish Cabinet met in emergency session during Friday night and the Irish Prime Minister Mr. Liam Cosgrave was expected to make a statement.

In Belfast, Northern Ireland, talks to try to end the Protestant workers' strike broke down and there was a threat of a complete electricity blackout. Protestant Loyalist leaders met britain's Northern Ireland Secretary Mr. Merlyn Rees, but the meeting broke up after forty minutes.
