Background: The first leg of the final of the African Club Championship between Hafia of Guinea and Rangers International of Nigeria was played at the Guinea National Stadium, Conakry.
Hafia dominated play in the first half with fluid performances on the forward line but seemed destined not to score. Again and again the Guineans stormed the goal mouth, only to lose the ball in an undisciplined exhibition of football.
The battered Nigerian defenders could count themselves fortunate that the enthusiastic Guinean forwards could not force the ball through to the net. However, shortly before half-time, the attacking play of the Guinean players payed dividends, as one Hafia player slipped through the Nigerian defence and smashed home the first-and only-score of the match.
The Nigerians were determined to equalise in the second half but could not capitalise on two great scoring chances and during the lat several minutes both teams were reduced to playing some of the tightest defensive football seen by the large crowd for many years. The second leg of the match will be played in Nigeria in two weeks time.
SYNOPSIS: The first leg of the African Club Football Championship was played in the Guinean National Stadium in Conakry, Guinea, between Rangers International of Nigeria and the local club, Hafia. The Guineans attacked from the start and bore forward with passing that was obviously well rehearsed on the practice field. However, the Hafia team management did not appear to anticipate the outstanding success of such tactical manoeuvres for, once on the forward line, the Guineans didn't seem to have any idea of how to push the ball over that elusive line and into the net. The consequent storming of the Nigerian goalmouth ended up repeatedly in full scale confusion as the over-enthusiastic Hafia players tried to smash the ball home only to have it recovered by the Nigerian goalkeeper.
Although the Nigerians received several free kicks they could not counter the enthusiasm of the Hafia defence.
But shortly before half-time the big chance came for the home team as the Nigerian defence made a mistake ... and it was all the Hafia forwards needed.
Spurred on by the only goal in the match, the Guineans stormed the Nigerian goalmouth, cutting the Rangers defence to shreds along the way as they again used their well practised passing techniques to cross from wing to wing. But this time the Nigerians remained tight and forced the Hafia forwards into hurried mistakes.
The second half saw both teams falling back on defensive play and there was no other score in the rest of the match- Hafia winning one goal to nil.
