Background: INTRODUCTION: The annual Dakar Six Hour race was held on Sunday (6 March).

SYNOPSIS: Altogether 29 cars took part in the endurance race, including 15 from France. Among the drivers were Italian Carlo Facetti, and winner in the past two races, Raymond Tourroul of France. Tourroul was partnered by Jean-Paul Jarier, the Formula One driver.

At the start of the race, Facetti in his Porsche took the lead from Tourroul who was in a similar car. Both were competing in the Group Five section for sports cars. The race was held on a track that included part of Dakar airport's roads and a special chicane was built on one of the straights. Altogether, the circuit covered 4.33 kilometres (2.7 miles), and the drivers had to travel as far as they could in the six hours of racing.

Jarier and Tourroul later took the lead from the Italian driver, and at the and of the first three hours held a two lap lead.

Facetti had dropped back when his mechanics tightened a wheel too hard and he was delayed while changing a flat tyre. Didier Calmels in Porsche Number 19 was another driver going well at the half-way stage.

In the second half of the race, Facetti ran into further troubles. First he left the track and badly damaged the front of his car. He later lost most of the gears in his car and finished well down in the field. But for Jarier and Tourroul, the race was a smooth progression to the chequered flag.

It was Tourroul's third victory in succession in the race. The winning car covered 184 laps or a distance of just under 800 kilometres (500 miles) and was ten laps clear of the second place car.
