Background: Alfredo Escalera of Puerto Rico retained his World Boxing Council (WBC) world junior lightweight title after the Japan Boxing Commission (JBC) ruled "no contest" in his title bout against "Buzzsaw" Yamabe in Nara, Japan, on Thursday night (1 April).

The Commission ruled that referee Ismail Falu of Puerto Rico Failed to count to 10 and to consult with a doctor and the chief second, as is required by the Commission, before he stopped the fight in the sixth round. The first rounds of the title bout had been even with Escalera using his gloves and fast footwork to block and dodge Yamabe's aggressive punching.

Escalera launched his first serious attack in the third round with a flurry of hard lefts and rights to the Japanese challenger's head and body, but Yamabe absorbed the punishment. Falu ended the scheduled 15-round bout in the sixth round as Yamabe dodged uncertainly from a flurry of punches by Escalera. There were no knockdowns in the match, which had been even up to that point.

The referee's action touched off confusion and a storm of protest. For 25 minutes there was no official announcement. Some of the 6,500 spectators hurled seat cushions and other objects into the ring to protest against the decision. Finally, the Japan Boxing Commission announced that it would declare the match no contest and no fight money would be paid.
