Background: Sapporo, in Japan, was the venue last week for rehearsals for the 1972 Winter Olympics. The week-long round of events went off without incident, and provided some good film. In this production, we show some of the more entertaining jumps.
SYNOPSIS: Last week's dress rehearsal for the 1972 Winter Olympics at Sapporo, Japan, ended with Russian athletes taking home most of the prizes. But in the 90 metre ski jump, seen here, it was Norway's Ingolf Mork who took the honours with a 101 metre jump. With his first jump and points for style, it was enough to land Mork the gold medal.
For Japan, it was Shoki Konno who saved the day by making the longest overall jump in the 90 metres -- with a leap, at his second attempt, of 105 metres. Earlier in the day, Konno only managed 95 metres...but his second jump landed him second place.
Conditions on the newly built slope at Sapporo, only criticised for the steepness of the slope, were near perfect. Here is a slow motion view of Konno on the 90 metres.
