Background: The French Agriculture Minister, Edith Cresson, has met criticism from the country's farming lobby the Federation Nationale des Syndicates Exploitants Agricole (FNSEA), even after announcing a new package of investment aids. The latest package, worth 66 million dollars comes on top of a 910 million dollar subsidy to French farmers in December. Madame Cresson said aid was needed to compensate farmers for continuing increases in production costs and cuts in revenue. Madame Cresson had been heavily criticised in the past by Francois Guillaume President of the 700,000 strong FNSEA. At the organisation's annual convention, he attacked Britain for making a European Community farm price agreement more difficult by linking the agricultural debate with its demand for reduced payments to the Community. M. Guillaume said, to loud applause, that the EEC should agree prices through a majority vote and present Britain with the choice of taking or leaving the package. Madame Cresson did not say if she would adopt that approach.
