Background: The former Nigerian leader, Yakubu Gowon, was given a warm welcome when he arrived for a week-long visit to the Togolese capital, Lome.
General Gowon was deposed as Nigeria's leader in a bloodless coup in July and shortly afterwards he joined his family in Britain. It's believed he will stay there indefinitely. General Gowon is now studying politics at Warwick University. He started the course on Monday (6 October).
On his recent visit General Gowon was met at the border between Ghana and Togo by his long-time personal friend, President Gnassingbe Eyadema, and members of the Togo Government. President Eyadema is reported to be keen to maintain his friendship with General Gowon, while keeping good relations with the new authorities in Nigeria.
At a dinner given by the Lome City Council during his visit General Gowon said that despite his departure from the political scene he felt that it was very important that there was internal peace and stability in all african countries. He hoped that there would be continued friendship and cooperation between Togo and Nigeria and in particular between General Eyadema and the new Nigerian leader, General Murtala Mohammed.
