Background: THE JAPANESE SELF-DEFENSE FORCES SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED THE FIRST JAPANESE-MADE MISSILE FORM NIIJIMA ISLANDS, SOUTH OF TOKYO, THE JAPANESE CAPITAL, JULY 8.

THIS WAS THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF TEST OF ELEVEN MISSILES OF FIVE TYPES, GROUND-TO-AIR AND AIR-TO-AIR, TO BE FINISHED AUGUST 5 THIS YEAR.

A DANGER ZONE SET BY THE JAPANESE DEFENCE BOARD WAS CLEARED AND SOME ISLANDERS WHO HAD PERSISTENTLY OPPOSED THE LAUNCHING OF THE MISSILES USED NO VIOLENCE.

THE MISSILE - A TAAM 2-0 AIR-TO-AIR MISSILE WAS LAUNCHED DONE HOUR BEHIND SCHEDULE BECAUSE OF MIST IN THE LAUNCHING AREA.

IT RAISED ABOUT TWO THOUSAND METRES (2,187 YARDS) IN THE AIR AND WAS RECOVERED THREE MINUTES LATER ON THE WATERS ABOUT FOUR KILOMETERS (2.4 MILES) FROM THE LAUNCHING PLACE.

THE MISSILE, WITH SOLID FUEL, HAS A FLIGHT RANGE OF SIX KILOMETERS (3.7 MILES).

SOLID FUEL IS USED FOR AIR-TO-AIR MISSILES AND LIQUID FUEL IS USED FOR GROUND-TO-AIR MISSILES.
