Background: New and improved Formula One cars were out on the Kyalami racetrack near Johannesburg for Grand Prix circuit preliminary practices and tests on February 27. Being the first day, times weren't of major importance - but current world champion Nelson Piquet was driving his new Brabham BMW hard. It's designed by Gordon Murray and after the day's practice Piquet said he was satisfied with the way the car was handling. Jacques Laffite was also driving hard in his Tag Williams Turbo. The new Renault Elf team were keeping secretive about one of their cars, driven by Derek Warwick, which they didn't want filmed. Piquet said Renault was one team to watch when asked about his chances this year. British-based teams have all flown to South Africa for these practices and high-altitude tests. Nigel Mansell was taking the New Lotus turbo around the track adn Ayrton Senna, the 1983 British Championship Formula Three winner, was in the Candy Toleman car. Senna is reputedly looking to take over Piquet's top ranking position. He will have a chance to prove himself in his homeland, Brazil, in the first Grand Prix on March 25.
