Background: The S.S. Atlantic, a United States passenger ship which specializes in warm climate pleasure cruises, is sailing somewhere in the Carribean Sea. During most of the weekend (21 and 22 Jan) many of its passengers were seized with doubt as to whether they would ever get to the Carribean region. The big ship--with 300 passengers and 330 crewmen--hit a sand bar in the harbor of Port Everglades, Florida, Friday (20 January).
All day Friday, efforts to move the ship failed. Late Saturday afternoon (21 January), several tug boats pulled the Atlantic off the sand bar, Some of the passengers cheered when the vessel started moving. Yes, the S.S. Atlantic was aground again--on another sand bar.
The Captain of the ship said a misplaced buoy was responsible for the mishap.
Sunday afternoon, a group of tug boats finally freed the ship from the second bar.. and sailed back to the Port Everglades while the band played "when the saints come marching home."
The passengers left the vessel while officials inspected it. They declared the Atlantic was undamaged. About two thirds of the passengers returned aboard to continue with the voyage to the sunny Carribean.
