Background: INTRODUCTION: An exhibition of recently unearthed corpses and artifacts from China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous region has opened in Peking. The 150 piece collection includes exhibits over 3,000 years old and some remarkably preserved corpses which although not mummified retained their forms as a result of the arid conditions in western China.

SYNOPSIS: The exhibition is on display at the Duanmen Gate Tower to the north of Tiananmen Square and includes a wide variety of exhibits from well preserved corpses to wooden burial figures. The corpses to wooden burial figures. The corpse of this woman is believed to be over 3,000 years old. It was found in the Xinjiang region in 1978. Long braids of hair indicate she lived among the minority nationalities of the western region, where it was also a custom to bury the dead curled up in a ball.

This couple was in peaceful repose for mor than 1,900 years at the Niya ruins. Judging from the man's brocade robes and the objects buried with him he could have been a military commander.

The body of General Zhang Xiong was unearthed in 1973 in Asiduna. He belonged to one of the most prominent families of ancient time the Gao Chang. Sixty-five graves of this clan were also found nine the area.

Wooden burial-figurines of warrior stepping on demons were placed at the entrance of the graves to scare away evil spirits. Figurines in national costume were also included -- the extreme climactic conditions preserving the colours.
