Background: In Lebanon, artillery gunners of the right-wing forces, entrenched in an area along the Israeli border, shelled the Southern ports of Tyre and Sidon on Monday (27 October), wounding a soldier and damaging several houses.

SYNOPSIS: In Tyre, residential areas were hit, and, in Sidon, an army barracks was damaged. During the bombardment, Israeli planes flew over the Southern coast, reportedly on reconnaissance missions, and were met by anti-aircraft fire.

Both towns have suffered a number of similar attacks in the long conflict between the militias and Palestinian-leftist forces. The Right-wing "Voice of Hope" radio, monitored in Sidon on Monday (27 October), said their forces would continue to bombard the area until the release of civilians it claimed were being held while passing through Tyre. The day before, Lebanon's new Premier Shafiq Al-Wazzan, had announced the information of a 22-man Cabinet. Political sources, however, said it was unlikely to be recognised as a government of national unity by Lebanon's different political groupings.
