Background: AIRLINERS WILL IN FUTURE BE GUIDED IN LANDING AND TAKING OFF BY GREEK-CYPRIOT STAFF AT NICOSIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. BRITAIN'S ROYAL AIR FORCE YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) HANDED OVER THE AIRPORT'S CONTROL TOWER TO THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT.

UNDER THE TREATY GIVING CYPRUS INDEPENDENCE IN 1960, THE RAF TOOK CONTROL OF APPROACH AIR TRAFFIC BUT PROMISED TO HAND IT OVER TO CYPRUS WHEN CYPRIOT AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL HAD BEEN SUFFICIENTLY TRAINED. ELEVEN CYPRIOT AIR CONTROLLERS RECEIVED EXTENSIVE TRAINING IN BRITAIN AND THE CYPRIOT GOVERNMENT LAST WEEK HERE ASKED TO TAKE OVER.

NICOSIA AIRPORT IS SURROUNDED BY HIGH MOUNTAINS AND ITS CONTROL REQUIRES MUCH SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE. IT AVERAGES TEN INTERNATIONAL ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES DAILY, PLUS LOCAL AND MILITARY FLIGHTS.

FIVE RAF LIAISON OFFICERS AND FOUR STAFFING RADAR CONTROL WILL REMAIN IN THE TOWER, BUT FIVE EXPERTS RECENTLY ARRIVED FROM GREECE WILL CONTROL OVER-FLYING AIRCRAFT.
