Background: There've been more demonstrations in France against the tactics used by police during clashes at a nuclear reactor site in which a 31 year old man died. Protests were being planned outside the provincial courtroom where twelve people faced charges arising out of violence at Creys-Malville.
SYNOPSIS: Hundreds of demonstrators marched through the streets of Montparnasse in Paris on Friday (5 August). The new protests followed the results of an autopsy which showed that Vital Michalon, a teacher, died as the result of an explosion and not a heart attack as the authorities had claimed at first. There's been widespread criticism in France of the conduct of the paramilitary riot police who used percussion grenades against protestors last week (31 July). Government officials have attacked the behaviour of West German demonstrators who were present in large numbers at Creys-Malville.
Seven of the twelve people facing trial are West Germans. Along with three French and two Swiss they were charged with offences including possession of petrol bombs, explosives or knives. Extensive police security was planned for outside the courthouse at Bourgoin-Jallieu near Lyons where the trial was to take place.
