Background: Riot police in Lima used teargas and water cannons to break up a demonstration on October 13. Hundreds of union members turned out to protest at the government's policies. Many of the marchers were fishing industry employees who have been protesting against the closure of their factories. More than four thousand workers are due to lose their jobs when the state-run plants close. The march and rally were the latest in a series of protests organised by the Communist-led Peruvian General Confederation of Labour (CGTP) against the austerity measures imposed by President Fernando Belaunde. More than two million Peruvian workers belong to the union, and the government has faced increasing opposition to its demands for economic out-backs. Violence erupted during the latest rally, when the riot police moved in to arrest the demonstrators. People living in houses lining the streets tried to extinguish the teargas which fell outside, but with little success. The demonstrators dispersed, but after the protest water cannon trucks patrolled the streets ready to quell any further disturbances.
